Durango & Silverton K-28 Mikes Doubleheading

Two Rio Grande K-28 "Mikes" doubleheading the Silverton train on the Durango & Silverton in June 1999. The 2-8-2's of the K-28 class were affectionately known as "Sports" and offered excellent clearances on the tight and twisting narrow gauge lines of the Colorado Rockies. They produced 28,000 lbs of tractive effort and often were relegated to secondary power in favor of the more powerful K-36 (480) and K-37 (490) locomotives when clearances and track conditions allowed. Most of the K-28 locomotives were lost to severe Arctic winters when the military confiscated and relocated them to Alaska for wartime service and security during the early 1940s.
