LKAB Malmbanan Ore Line, Norway

Malmbanan, the Ore Line, now upgraded to accommodate an axel pressure of 30 tonnes, was officially opened on Wednesday, March 7th. LKAB also celebrated the fact that the first full train set consisting of the new locomotive and new ore cars is now in operation on the southern section of the Ore Line, between Malmberget and Luleĺ.

LKAB’s goal is to make the transportation system – the Ore Line – one of the world’s most efficient railways, with internationally competitive freight costs. For the past five years, the company has operated the railway via its subsidiary, MTAB.

By investing in new locomotives and cars and upgrading the Ore Line to accommodate an axle pressure of 30 tonnes, LKAB has taken important steps towards the achievement of that goal. The line is expected to be fully upgraded by 2004, when another complete train set will also be operational.

New rolling stock and a 30-tonne axel pressure will enable major improvements in cost efficiency. Transport-cost reductions and efficiency improvements on the Ore Line are important elements of LKAB’s effort to maintain and strengthen its competitive advantage.
