British class 8F, 2-8-0 no. 48437 at Stockport

In the final months of normal service British steam traction, class 8F, 2-8-0 no. 48437 is seen at Stockport in April, 1968. This design, primarily intended for freight working, was introduced by Stanier in 1935, and over 660 were built. Boiler pressure 225 psi, 2 cylinders. With smaller driving wheels than the similar "Black five" they have a higher tractive effort of 32440 lb., at the expense of speed. Photo 1999, Ian Smith
