British Class 5MT, 2-6-0 no. 45455 at Gourock

Class 5MT, 2-6-0 no. 45455 propels empty stock into Gourock in preparation for the return service to Glasgow. Introduced by Stanier in 1934, over 840 of these "Black Fives" were built between then and 1951, with several examples fitted with modified bearings and valve gear. Boiler pressure 225 psi, 2 cylinders, tractive effort 25455 lb.

Taken in April, 1967, the penultimate year of steam traction in Britain, this photograph shows the suburban compartment coach so familiar to me in the 50s and early 60s. By 1967, the Glasgow-Gourock service employed a mixture of steam-hauled trains and diesel multiple unit trains. The photograph shows overhead cable newly installed in preparation for the introduction of electric multiple unit trains. Photo 1999, Ian Smith
