Built by GE/Alco at Schenectady June 1912. BC Hydro was the successor to the BC Electric Ry Co. BCER operated Vancouver's extensive street railway and a 150-mile interurban until the mid-50's. By the late 60's, just a mile or two of industrial spurs remained under wires. 961 went to Edmonton transit in 1980, renumbered ET 2001. Photo Vancouver, Nov. 1967.

Class 4, 2-6-0 no. 43027, is one of over 160 of the type, introduced by Ivatt in 1947, and is seen here at Preston in April, 1968 during the final months of steam traction on normal services on British Railways. Class 5MT, 2-6-0 no. 45455 propels empty stock into Gourock in preparation for the return service to Glasgow. Introduced by Stanier in 1934, over 840 of these "Black Fives" were built between then and 1951, with several examples fitted with modified bearings and valve gear. Boiler pressure 225 psi, 2 cylinders, tractive effort 25455 lb.

Taken in April, 1967, the penultimate year of steam traction in Britain, this photograph shows the suburban compartment coach so familiar to me in the 50s and early 60s. By 1967, the Glasgow-Gourock service employed a mixture of steam-hauled trains and diesel multiple unit trains. Class 7P6F, 4-6-2 no. 70013 "Oliver Cromwell" is one of 55 "Britannia" class pacifics introduced in 1951 to a British Railways standard design. This photograph was taken at Stockport on a special enthusiasts’ tour in April, 1968, in the final months of steam traction in normal service. Observant viewers will note that the "nameplate" on the smoke deflector is, in fact, painted, the original brass casting having been removed to make it safe from souvenir hunters.
