The Minnesota Transportation Museum's ex-GN Jackson Street Roundhouse in St. Paul, MN had a formal dedication of completion of the turntable installation in December of 2001. We used GN SD45 400 HUSTLE MUSCLE for the event and turned GN 400 360 degrees to formally dedicate the turntable completion. GN 400 is owned by the GNRyHS and is stored at Jackson Street. The turntable is from the ex-GN Mpls Jct. roundhouse. It was donated to the museum by BN several years ago. The roundhouse has three turntable leads with tracks into two bays with three tracks each.

Our primary motive power for our passenger operations out of Osceola, WI is MNTX GP7 559 painted in the SOO Line maroon and gold. MNTX 559 was originally RI 1223, ROCK 4505, CNW 4159, and WC 4159.

Norfolk & Western Class A #1218 at Birmingham, AL

Norfolk & Western Class A # 1218 is a 2-6-6-4 articulated locomotive. This photo was taken on October 9, 1988, as she departed Birmingham, AL with an excursion train headed for Chattanooga, TN. The huge coal fired locomotive was built during June 1942 for the war effort and spent much of her long life between the coal fields of West Virginia and the docks at Portsmouth, OH. The N & W stuck with steam power much longer than most major U S railroads. Her twelve 70 inch drivers and 300 psi boiler pressure produced a tremendous 112,500 lbs of tractive effort.

Norfolk & Western Class J # 611 near Dayton, TN

Norfolk & Western Class J # 611 near Dayton, TN on October 21, 1990. The "J" was pulling an excursion up the Southern Railway "Rathole" from Chattanooga, TN to Onieda, TN. The big coal fired 4-8-4 was built by the N&W in their Roanoke shops in May 1950. Her 70 inch drivers and 300 psi boiler pressure produced 80,000 lbs tractive effort.

Polish Ol 49 class 2-6-2 locomotive is being coaled at the Wolzstyn roundhouse while another OL 49 is accelerating out of town with its passenger train.

Up until the late 1980s, Poland was still using quite a bit of steam. After the wall came down, they got rid of their steam locomotives and great numbers very quickly. I heard reports of hundreds of locomotives being exploded with dynamite and scrapped. They did save their steam operation in Wolsztyn near Poznan has a sort of living/working Museum.

Rio Grande Southern "Galloping Goose" #5 at Dolores, CO

The Rio Grande Southern narrow gauge built these vehicles, affectionately known as a galloping goose, to haul light loads of passengers and freight across the Rocky Mountains. The Galloping Goose fleet was much less expensive to operate than a full train consist and could traverse the mountain railroad with increased speed. They served the financially strapped Rio Grande Southern well during its final days. The Rio Grande Southern served historic places such as Durango, Dolores, Ophir, Lizard Head Pass, Telluride, and Ridgeway. This photo was taken in May 2000 at the Rio Grande Southern Museum in Dolores, Colorado.
