On Sunday, September 17th, 2000 at 10:00 AM, Sounder representatives, local and state officials, invited guests and the general public gathered for a ceremony marking the beginning of commuter rail service in the Seattle area. Commuter trains will initially run from Tacoma to Seattle, with 2 trains per day each direction.

Here some Dragon Dancers from the International District are shown welcoming the passengers.

A trackside shot of the St. Paul, Minnesota Amtrak Station. The glass enclosed, single story area with a HVAC unit on the roof is the small first class waiting area. The heat might be OK but the air-conditioning didn't hold up on a hot morning. However, the views of arriving and departing trains are good from there.

St. Paul, MN Union Depot

The St. Paul, MN Union Depot after the trains stopped using it. As you can see there are now banners and things hanging on the building in some sort of effort to make the "Depot" look like something it isn't - and that doesn't work. Now the home of a couple restaurants, the local cable tv franchise and other such junk, this building once had trains coming and going about every ten minutes.

Behind those massive pillars is the entrance. Once upon a time the William Crooks stood just inside those doors. The east wing, main floor (on the right) was once the home of the Depot Model RR Club (I hope I have the name right), a huge O gauge layout.

Washington DC Union Station - Great Hall

the "Great Hall" in Washington D.C. Union Station. The front/main entrances to the station are on the left of this shot. The doors on the right lead to the main portion of the station where there are a lot of various stores and restaurants, Amtrak and local ticket windows and their passenger's waiting areas, and the gates to the various tracks.

The wood structure in the center of this photo is a restaurant or bar I believe. I took this photo at about 9:00 AM and it was closed. Looks like you could sit on the top or at a counter underneath.
