Special Trains : UP Torch Train 2002

The 2002 Olympic Torch Relay presented by Coca-Cola and Chevrolet was a 65-day, 13,500-mile journey across 46 states that began in Atlanta on Dec. 4, 2001. In addition to being carried by more than 11,500 Torchbearers, the Olympic Flame traveled via automobile, airplane, train, boat, dogsled, skier, horse-drawn sleigh, snowmobile, ice skaters and covered wagon.

The Olympic Flame traveled by railroad on a specially designed train for the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay, operated by Union Pacific Railroad. The train featured a specially created Cauldron Car for the Olympic Flame, two 2002 Olympic Winter Games custom-painted locomotives and 16 cars incorporating the look of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

The train transported the flame across portions of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada and Oregon. In all, the train for the Torch Relay carried the Olympic Flame more than 3,200 miles across 11 states.

This is the second time the Olympic Flame has moved by rail in the United States. Union Pacific also transported the Olympic Flame more than 3,500 miles during the Torch Relay for the Atlanta 1996 Centennial Olympic Games.

This is the "Cauldron Car", as it appeared during the Olympic Torch relay for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. The train carried the Olympic Flame during portions of the torch relay.

The two locomotives that pulled the train for the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay were specially painted using several shades of blue incorporating the Look of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games as well as having 2002 Olympic Torch Relay logos applied to the exterior.
