Amtrak Northeast Corridor Meet in the Snow

A snow scene along the Northeast Corridor. Northbound #94, "The Old Dominion" is led by a Genesis unit, in the NorthEast Blue and Silver color scheme. At Martin Airport, MD, it is passing Southbound companion "Old Dominion" #95. While the change from electric to diesel is usually made at Washington, DC, trains do sometime run with their diesels to Philadelphia, as 94 is on this snowy January day.

The eastbound Southwest Chief (#4) had four locomotives on the point as the eastbound train rounds a curve. Our Superliner sleeper was ideally placed for shots like this if the curves were large enough. The date was Dec 31, 1998 as we were returning to Kansas from a Christmas vacation in Arizona. Amtrak Southwest Chief climbing Raton Pass

Here is a shot out the window of the westbound Southwest Chief train as it climbs Raton Pass (Colorado-New Mexico border) on Sunday, Dec 20, 1998 bound for Los Angeles. We had the ride of our lives and went through the Raton Tunnel at an elevation of 7,588 feet above sea level. You can see the head end with it's four Genesis locomotives pulling the 23 car Amtrak train out of the snowy Great Plains.
